Pengertian Simple Past Tense

Simple past tense adalah suatu bentuk kata kerja sederhana untuk menunjukkan bahwa suatu kejadian terjadi di masa lampau.

Pada simple past tense, waktu kejadian (yesterday, last two days, last year) atau periode waktunya (for two months, for a day, for an hour) dapat disebutkan secara spesifik. Simple past tense juga dapat digunakan untuk membentuk conditional sentence tipe 2.

Rumus Simple Past Tense

Simple past tense dibentuk dari verb-2 (past tense) atau linking verb “be” (was, were). Apa itu verb-2? Verb-2 merupakan bare infinitive (bentuk dasar verb) dengan tambahan -ed, -en, -d, -t, -n, atau -ne untuk regular verb atau bentuk yang tidak konsisten pada irregular verb.

Was yang merupakan singular verb digunakan pada singular subject (seperti: I, she, he, it, Andi, dan the cat) kecuali “you”, sebaliknya were yang merupakan plural verb digunakan pada plural subject (seperti: you, they, we, Andi and Susi, dan the cats).

2. ( – ) She did not want to study Math yesterday. (Ia tidak ingin belajar Matematika kemarin.)
3. ( ? ) Did she want to study Math yesterday? (Apakah dia ingin belajar Matematika kemarin.)
4. ( + ) Last year we went to Malang. (Tahun lalu kami pergi ke Malang.)
5. ( – ) Last year we didn’t go to Solo. (Tahun lalu kami tidak pergi ke Solo.)
6. ( ? ) Did you go to Malang last year? (Apakah kamu pergi ke Malang tahun lalu?)
7. ( + ) I planned my summer holiday last week. (Saya merencanakan liburan musim panas minggu lalu.)
8. ( – ) I didn’t do my Art project last week. (Saya tidak mengerjakan proyek Kesenian minggu lalu.)
9. ( ? ) Did you do your Art project last week? (Apa kamu mengerjakan proyek Kesenian minggu lalu?)
10. ( + ) When I gave him a candy, he stopped crying. (Ketika aku memberinya permen, ia berhenti menangis.)
11. ( – ) If I didn’t give him a candy, he would cry. (Jika aku tidak memberinya permen, ia akan menangis..)
12. ( ? ) Why did you give him a candy? (Mengapa kamu memberinya permen?)
13. ( + ) Teena started school when she was five. (Teena mulai bersekolah ketika ia berusia 5 tahun.)
14. ( – ) Teena didn’t go to school when she was four. (Teena tidak ke sekolah saat ia berusia 4 tahun.)
15. ( ? ) Did Teena start school when she was four? (Apa Teena mulai bersekolah saat ia berusia 4 tahun?)
16. ( + ) My English class began at 9.30. (Kelas bahasa Inggris saya mulai pada pukul 09.30.)
17. ( – ) My English class did not begin at 8.00. (Kelas bahasa Inggris saya tidak mulai pada pukul 08.00.)
18. ( ? ) Did your English class begin at 9.00? (Apa kelas bahasa Inggrismu mulai pada pukul 09.00?)
19. ( + ) I ate my lunch an hour ago. (Saya makan siang sejam yang lalu.)
20. ( – ) I did not eat lunch with friends. (Saya tidak makan siang bersama teman-teman.)
21. ( ? ) Did you eat lunch with friends?
22. ( + ) Yesterday evening they had dinner with Mr. President. (Kemarin malam mereka makan bersama Bapak Presiden.)
23. ( – ) Yesterday evening they did not have dinner with their teacher. (Kemarin malam mereka tidak makan bersama guru mereka.)
24. ( ? ) Did they have dinner with their teacher yesterday night? (Apakah kemarin malam mereka makan bersama guru mereka?)
25. ( + ) My cat drank chocolate milk two days ago. (Kucing saya minum susu coklat dua hari yang lalu.)
26. ( – ) My cat didn’t drink chocolate milk yesterday. (Kucing saya tidak minum susu coklat kemarin.)
27. ( ? ) Did your cat drink chocolate milk yesterday? (Apakah kucingmu minum susu coklat kemarin?)
28. ( + ) He liked the food in a food stall like this. (Ia menyukai makanan di warung makan seperti ini.)
29. ( – ) He didn’t like the food in an expensive restaurant. (Ia tidak menyukai makanan di restoran mahal.)
30. ( ? ) Did he like the food in an expensive restaurant? (Apa ia menyukai makanan di restoran mahal?)

Keterangan:
( + ) Kalimat positif dengan menggunakan Verb 2 atau kata kerja Past Tense
( – ) Kalimat negatif (penolakan/penyangkalan) menggunakan did not / didn’t dan kata kerja Verb 1
( ? ) Kalimat interogatif (pertanyaan) diawali dengan Auxiliary Verb DID dan kata kerja Verb 1
